Despite great expectations in the Seine River Basin, the WFD did not reduce diffuse pollution ArchiMer
Bouleau, Gabrielle; Barbier, Rémy; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre; Tassin, Bruno; Buchs, Arnaud; Habets, Florence.
European stakeholders engaged in combatting the eutrophication of the North Sea welcomed three Water Framework Directive innovations: a more holistic approach to quality, the binding nature of WFD objectives, and greater public participation. Twenty years later, however, there has been a disappointing amount of progress in the reduction of diffuse pollution. In the Seine River Basin, the amount of livestock rearing is low; yet the basin is subject to significant diffuse pollution due to agriculture. This paper reports our study of this case; we examine the literature on WFD implementation policy in order to identify the physical and social causes of this failure to reduce diffuse pollution. We show that the nitrates, phosphorus, and pesticides that affect...

Effect of oral exposure to the acaricide pirimicarb, a new varroacide candidate, on apis mellifera feeding rate ArchiMer
Riva, Clemence; Sokolowski, Michel B. C.; Normand, Julien; Santos, Jana Sopkova-de Oliveira; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
BACKGROUND The ectoparasitic honey bee mite Varroa destructor is one of the main causes related to the gradual decline of honey bees Apis mellifera. Nowadays, beekeepers utilize a wide range of different synthetic acaricides, organic acids and essential oils to keep mite populations under control. A previous work had shown that pirimicarb could be a new varroacide candidate. The aim of this study was to observe the chronic effects on worker honey bees feeding activity after an oral exposure to 1.05 mM of pirimicarb. Long-term effect of a 24 hours exposition to pirimicarb were also tested. RESULTS After three successive trials were performed, no mortality could be detected at the tested concentration, oral exposure to pirimicarb had significant effect on...

Etude d’outils d’évaluation de la contamination ChimiqUe dans les eaux de la ManchE - ECUME ArchiMer
Menet-nedelec, Florence; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre; Maheux, Frank; Pierre-duplessix, Olivier; Simon, Benjamin; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Repecaud, Michel; Facq, Jean-valery.

In silico chemical library screening and experimental validation of novel compounds with potential varroacide activities ArchiMer
Riva, Clémence; Suzanne, Peggy; Charpentier, Gabriel; Dulin, Fabienne; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre; Sopkova-de Oliveira Santos, Jana.
The mite Varroa destructor is an ectoparasite and has been identified as a major cause of worldwide honey bee colony losses. The use of yearly treatments for the control of varroosis is the most common answer to prevent collapses of honey bee colonies due to the mite. However, the number of effective acaricides is small and the mite tends to become resistant to these few active molecules. In this study, we have been looking for a new original varroacide treatment inhibiting selectively Varroa destructor AChE (vdAChE) with respect to Apis mellifera AChE (amAChE). To do this an original drug design methodology was used applying virtual screening of the CERMN chemolibrary, starting from a vdAChE homology sequence model. By combining the in silico screening...

Joint effects of nine antidepressants on Raphidocelis subcapitata and Skeletonema marinoi : a matter of amine functional groups ArchiMer
Minguez, Laetitia; Bureau, Ronan; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
Antidepressants are among the most prescribed pharmaceuticals throughout the world. Their presence has already been detected in several aquatic ecosystems worldwide and their effects on non-target organisms justify the growing concern of both the public and regulatory authorities. These emerging pollutants do not occur as isolated compounds but rather as multi-component mixtures, which may lead to increased adverse effects compared to individual compounds. Freshwater and marine algae seem particularly sensitive to pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants. Studies assessing the toxicity of antidepressant mixture to algae focused mainly on binary mixtures of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. In the present experiment, the freshwater algae...

Toxicity assessment of five emerging pollutants, alone and in binary or ternary mixtures, towards three aquatic organisms ArchiMer
Di Poi, Carole; Costil, Katherine; Bouchart, Valerie; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
Despite a growing scientific attention on ecological impact of emerging pollutants (EPs) such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and pesticides, knowledge gaps remain regarding mixture toxicity and effects on aquatic organisms. Several EPs were screened in seawater (Normandy, France), and the ecotoxicity of five compounds, chosen on their occurrence in ecosystems and use worldwide, was assessed and were the biocides methylparaben (MP) and triclosan (TCS), a pesticide degradation product (AMPA), and the pharmaceuticals venlafaxine (VEN) and carbamazepine (CBZ). The acute or sub-chronic toxicity, alone or in binary/ternary mixtures of three of them (CBZ, AMPA, and MP), was assessed on one marine and two freshwater organisms: Crassostrea gigas,...
